Before the App Store launch

PocketScribe is in development. Some test builds use the working name LocalScribe. These guides describe the current build and identify features planned for release.

No App Store download or paid subscription is available from this website yet.

Getting started and model downloads

In the development build, record or import a short file, open the saved note and choose Transcribe. The first transcription downloads speech and speaker models. Use a reliable internet connection, allow sufficient free storage and keep the app open while setup finishes. The final download size will be documented before release.

Microphone permission

When you choose to record, iOS asks for microphone access. If you previously declined, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable PocketScribe. Development builds may still appear as LocalScribe. Importing an existing file does not need microphone access.

Importing audio and video

The development build accepts WAV, M4A, MP3, AIFF/AIF and CAF audio, plus MP4/MOV video with an audio track. Supported file containers do not guarantee every codec will decode. Try a standard WAV or M4A file if an import fails. Only import media you have permission to use.

Transcription failed or stopped

Your saved recording remains in the library. Reopen it and retry transcription. Check storage, model setup and that the audio contains clear speech. Very long recordings, background interruptions and overlapping voices are still undergoing release testing.

Speaker labels and transcript corrections

Speaker labels distinguish voices within each recording. They are not identity verification. Rename a speaker to update their label, or reassign a passage. Use Edit to correct the text; Restore original returns a passage to the original transcription.

Playing, finding and exporting a transcript

Search the library or search within a transcript. Tap a passage to seek its audio. The Share action offers text copying, TXT, Markdown and SRT export, plus the original audio where available. Your chosen destination controls any copy you share.

Deleting recordings and managing backups

In the current development build, Delete moves a recording to Recently Deleted. It stays there until restored; there is no automatic expiry or permanent-delete action yet. It still uses storage. To remove the entire local library, use iOS Delete App, not Offload App. Save any exports you want first. iCloud or computer backups and exported copies are managed separately and may retain data.

Subscriptions, restore and cancellation

Paid subscriptions are not available yet. The planned offer is three successful transcriptions free, then optional monthly or annual access for new transcriptions. At launch, purchases will be handled by Apple, with Restore Purchases in the app. Manage or cancel an Apple subscription in Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Devices, languages and Highlights

Core transcription has been tested on iPhone 14 Pro. The current deployment target is iOS 17, but the final supported-device and language list is not yet confirmed. Optional Highlights need iOS 26+, a compatible Apple Intelligence device, enabled Apple Intelligence and available models. iPhone 14 Pro supports core transcription but not Apple Intelligence Highlights.
